Compare HVAC Quotes,
Apples to Apples.
Holding two or three quotes that all say different things? That’s completely normal, and it’s a lot to sort through. We’ll walk your home with you and help you understand exactly what you’re looking at. Free, no strings, even if we’re not bidding the job.
Why don’t two HVAC quotes ever match?
Because they’re often quoting different projects. One company may include a new thermostat, permit, and duct sealing. Another may quote the equipment alone and handle the rest as add-ons later. Neither approach is wrong. They’re just answering the question differently.
The trouble is that you end up comparing two numbers that don’t describe the same work. Once you line up the scope, the real comparison usually becomes obvious fast.
What should be included in an HVAC quote?
Here’s the checklist we walk through with you. If a quote is missing an item, that’s not a red flag, it’s just a question worth asking before you sign.
- Equipment details: brand, model number, tonnage, and SEER2 efficiency rating. Without these, you’re comparing prices for unknown machines.
- Sizing: was a Manual J load calculation performed, or was the size assumed from the old unit? This is the single biggest one. For what it is worth, we run a load calculation on every home, and a full Manual J whenever the house has changed, the old system was the wrong size, or the layout is unusual.
- Warranty, split out: parts warranty and labor warranty are different things, with different lengths. A great parts warranty with one year of labor is a very different deal.
- What’s included: new lineset, pad, disconnect, thermostat. These are often assumed rather than stated.
- Old equipment removal and disposal: included, or a line item added later?
- Permit and inspection: pulled and priced in, or left to you?
- Ductwork: any modifications, sealing, or return-air changes needed for the new system to actually perform?
- Payment terms: deposit, schedule, financing rate and length. The monthly number can hide a very different total.
How do I know if the system is sized right?
This is the one most people never think to ask, and it matters more than the price. A Manual J load calculation measures what your specific home actually needs: square footage, insulation, windows, sun exposure, ductwork, ceiling height.
Sizing from the old unit assumes the old unit was right, which it often wasn’t. An oversized system cools fast, shuts off before it pulls humidity out, and leaves your home cold and clammy while short cycling. Right-sized beats bigger every time.
It’s also why a real review means seeing your home. Anyone can eyeball a price on paper. Only a walkthrough can tell you whether the system actually fits your house.
What’s the difference between a parts warranty and a labor warranty?
Parts warranty covers the components; labor warranty covers the work to install or replace them. They’re separate, and they’re often very different lengths.
A ten-year parts warranty sounds wonderful until a part fails in year six and the labor to swap it isn’t covered. When you compare quotes, read them as two separate numbers, because that’s what they are.
